This case is part of the Giving Voice to Values (GVV) curriculum. To see other material in the GVV curriculum, please visit http://store.darden.virginia.edu/giving-voice-to-values. In this case, a student in a "Foundations of Management and Entrepreneurship" (FME) class struggles with his business team's performance-appraisal process. The process, called "360? performance appraisal," gives each team member the chance to provide feedback to everyone else on the team. The performance appraisals have an effect on the team members' grades, so the team leader suggested that everyone should give each other high scores regardless of performance. The case's protagonist has some misgivings about this, however. Not all of his teammates have been productive or have carried their full share of the workload, and he thinks it is important to give each team member an honest evaluation. He wants to be honest, but isn't sure how to proceed given the team pressures. This case works well in organizational behavior, human resource management, teamwork, entrepreneurship, management communications, power and influence, and ethics courses, as well as in stand-alone workshops.
