The premises of Wistron Infocomm Manufacturing (India) Private Limited (WIMPL) a 100% subsidiary of Wistron Corporation (WC), Taiwan, was vandalized by a group of agitated contract workers on December 12, 2020. Located in Narasapura in Karnataka state of India, WIMPL is a contract manufacturer of Apple Inc's iconic iPhones, under the 'Make in India' initiative. Contract workers represented 85% of the WIMPL's total workforce and they were appointed through various staffing agencies. The outburst by contract workers who were not unionised, was the result of unaddressed grievances related to alleged wage theft, delay in payment, poor working conditions, faulty attendance system, etc. The case discusses the background of events that caused the situation, including the responsibilities of different actors and contract labour management. The case also covers broader issues relating to labour rights in supply chains, and corporate governance.
