Program Overview
This two-day program is a high-energy, high-engagement introduction to the strategies and methods essential to creating a successful student-centered learning environment—the environment central to successful experiential learning and at the heart of most case method teaching. The program describes the tools and techniques commonly employed by the best case method teachers, explores the appropriate use of student-centered learning in a variety of settings, and helps participants build their own unique teaching style employing student-centered techniques.
The experience will benefit anyone trying to create compelling learning environments—university professors, corporate university instructors, and consultants—by deepening their ability to stimulate student learning. The program will focus on:
1. Tips and techniques for creating high energy discussions that foster deep learning by participants
2. Strategies and structures to ensure learning objectives are achieved even in the fluid and unpredictable setting that is at the heart of student-centered learning
3. Clearly articulating the advantages and disadvantages of student-centered learning with an emphasis on mitigating the disadvantages and leveraging the advantages in a variety of settings
4. Helping participants develop their own unique approach to employing these techniques.
The instructors are two of Darden’s faculty with a track record of classroom excellence and award winning performance: Mary Margaret Frank and Marc Lipson have taught extensively and between them have taught in a broad variety of contexts—open enrollment and customized executive education, undergraduate and MBA classes and speaker engagements. Their expertise ranges from Leadership to Accounting and Finance.
Participants
This program is designed for faculty and corporate/organizational trainers/educators who wish to master the case method pedagogical approach and to further develop their own unique teaching style. This seminar is appropriate for new or experienced instructors and for those teaching in any area of business study. The sessions will be highly interactive—to model the processes and techniques discussed in class and to generate learning-by-doing opportunities for the participants. Preparation for the seminar will include a modest amount of pre-seminar reading.
Program Outline
The program will emphasize and model the key learning objectives both by implementing the techniques being taught and requiring participants to actively engage in the sessions. The seminar will include very little advance preparation, but participants will be expected to prepare during the day for various activities and to share their perspectives throughout the program. By leveraging unique participant questions and challenges arising from their own instruction environments, the seminar will engage with a broad range of contexts and emphasize the general applicability of student-centered learning.
Program Format
This two-day-long seminar will be conducted on-site at the Darden School’s Sands Family Grounds, located in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington, DC. The course has two parts. One day and half the next are structured learning sessions with full group and breakout portions. Students will have many opportunities to discuss and explore. The second half of the second day will be a practicum in which participants will be given an opportunity to actually lead a portion of a discussion; observe others doing so; and both provide and receive feedback.
